On Building Things

There’s a certain satisfaction that comes from building something that works. Not just works — works well. The kind of thing where every piece fits together and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what separates good software from great software, and I keep coming back to the same answer: taste. Not in the aesthetic sense (though that matters too), but in the sense of knowing what to leave out.

The best things I’ve built are the ones where I had the discipline to stop adding features.
